1/30 – 2/5 – Start Your Day with Fruits and Veggies

How many fruits and vegetables are on your plate each day? MyPlate, a new tool from the USDA, recommends that half the food you eat daily should be fruits and vegetables. Starting with breakfast, loading half your plate is easy with a few tips from the food and nutrition experts—registered dietitians:

  • Do you grab breakfast on the go? Pack a banana, apple or box of raisins in your bag for the road.
  • Add a splash of flavor to whole-grain cereal or low-fat or fat-free yogurt by mixing in blueberries, strawberries, bananas or raspberries.
  • Enjoy scrambled eggs? Mix in mushrooms, asparagus or tomatoes for a garden scramble. Consider using egg whites rather than whole eggs if you’re concerned about cholesterol.
  • Did you know that one cup of 100-percent juice counts as a serving? Consider drinking a serving of fruits or veggies during breakfast, but remember that juices do not provide as much fiber as actual fruits or vegetables, so don’t drink juice alone.
