Tai Chi in the Park is the first of many healthy public offerings in Lackawanna County
Beginning June 19, Geisinger-Community Medical Center will offer tai chi classes in Nay Aug Park as part of their ongoing expansion of community wellness initiatives. Classes will be held every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. through July 24.

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition and practiced as a form of exercise. A series of graceful movements performed in a slow and focused manner, it also involves relaxed, deep breathing. Due to its low impact on muscles and joints, the gentle practice of tai chi is widely considered one of the safest exercises for all ages and fitness levels.

Instructor Rick Schmoyer, of Dunmore’s Chinese Qigong Center for Self-Healing, has been teaching tai chi classes for more than 45 years. “Tai chi increases flexibility, balance, and range of motion,” said Schmoyer. “It increases muscle strength and elasticity, and it decreases stress and anxiety. Participants often experience increased energy and stamina. There is also evidence that tai chi may improve joint pain, overall well-being, and quality of sleep.”

Tai Chi in the Park participants should meet in Nay Aug Park, near the Arthur Avenue side, adjacent to the Gentile Pavilion. Classes will be offered for $2 per session, and will be held rain or shine. For more information or to register, please call Sharyn Wozniak at 570.969.8986. When starting any new exercise program, please consult with your doctor.

On June 3, 2013, Geisinger-Community Medical Center will break ground on an $80 million expansion project. Scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2015, the expansion will include an all-new, 14 bed operating suite, a brand new intensive care/ critical care unit, an enhanced lobby that will extend to Mulberry Street and additional clinical and physician office space. All hospital services will be available and will continue without interruption during construction.

The public is invited to attend an Expansion Open House on June 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. in a tent across from the hospital’s Emergency Department on Mulberry Street. Information tables, video presentations and flyers will be available. Light refreshments will also be served.

G-CMC has also established a “construction hotline” to address the community’s questions regarding the project. Call 570-969-8077 or email questions to ConstructionGCMC@Geisinger.edu. All inquiries will be answered within 24 hours.

For more information, the public can also visit a special webpage devoted to the expansion project at www.cmccare.org.

The expansion at G-CMC is part of a $158.6 million investment Geisinger Health System has committed to enhance clinical programs, increase physician recruitment, expand and improve facilities and implement new information systems in Scranton and its surrounding communities. A $20 million project to upgrade G-CMC’s technology infrastructure, including integration into Geisinger’s electronic health record system, was completed in February. In March, Geisinger also broke ground on a $25.7 million primary care facility in the Mount Pleasant Corporate Center that is scheduled to open in 2014.
